LAUREL MANOR CHAPTER MINUTES:  NOVEMBER 1, 2011

Back to Laurel Manor
We continue to welcome back good friends, and get to know new members, as the meeting room fills up each week. It's really a thrill to watch a familiar, missed face walk through the doors.

Haven House:  The hands down highlight of this week's meeting was hearing from Kelly Smallridge, MA, the Executive Director of Haven of Lake & Sumter Counties, Inc. (I'm sure she's much too young for all that responsibility - she was just a sweet young thing!)  Anyway, a serious place doing very needed service. She gave a brief outline, which opened us to many questions from members. Each answer led to another, and we were all, frankly in awe of what this is really all about and how it functions. As a result of our newly gained knowledge, the members agreed that this wonderful place would be the recipient of our Christmas Charity donations this year. We asked what area of its residents needed to be recognized, and she said without a hesitation, the older kids. The little ones get all the attention, and receive plenty, but the older kids are frankly left behind. So, that's our focus. Jeannie will be contacting her back for specific kids, for as far as our ear-marked funds, will stretch.

Leading to the next topic: Bring checkbooks, bring cash, bring your change jar, empty the envelope in your drawer, dump out your purse and bring the money at the bottom, bring a snack to share - bring your donations!!!

First annual in-house "Auction for the Treasury":  Come, everyone, to Jeannie's house this Tuesday, Nov. 8th, at the regular 8:30 time, and join in the fun while contributing to the cause. We'll have the best of all worlds going on here, you know.... Great friends, a fun event, led by Auctioneer Pat Chapin, items you could not get anywhere else, for whatever price YOU want to pay, a guaranteed amount of "Ooooh's and Ahhhh's - laugh's and antics, some food for the body, and most important, a worthy place for the funds, which is food for the heart. Carpool, if possible, but get there!

Oh, incidentally - we will be drawing from the amazing lot of Halloween Blocks, too.

Directions to Jeannie's house: 1158 Eureka Mill Run - The Village of Bonita
If you are on Canal Street - go through the Bonita Gate, turn right on Homeland (it is right before the lake), take the 3rd turn to the right (that will be Heath Springs), take the 1st left - 4th house on the left.
If you are on Odell or Buena Vista - go to Bonita Blvd, turn on Canal, go through the Bonita Gate and follow directions above.
If you need any help, call Jeannie at 302-242-3522

OTHER STUFF

COMING PROJECTS:  Christi has identified a great new quilt project from a Show and Tell that returning member, Cheryl Cruickshank had HAND MADE this summer. It's a sampler of different design blocks, is easy, looks great when done, and we can pick our own colors. No, we don't have to hand-sew ... that was just Cheryl's choice at the time. Christi will be organizing the patterns and information for us, and will report back Nov. 15th.

Pat has volunteered to come up with a smaller project, possibly a decorative panel, as an additional project. The possibilities for this are unlimited, and we have the perfect person with unlimited imagination, to create it!

DUES will continue to be collected; Jeannie's new roster is in the process. The new membership cards will be available in December.

Thank you to Carole Cranston for assembling our current friendship quilt, and supplying the backing. We need someone to take it from her for final assembly and finish. It's lovely. Please let Jeannie know if you are able to step in and help out with this part of the project.

RETREAT:  The many attending this wonderful event, SOON, should be prepared to bring a few items that might make the experience a little more comfortable. Bring all your favorite sewing supplies, your small to medium cutting surfaces, an area lamp is helpful and maybe an extension cord, an ironing pad and iron will be needed. A suggestion of a folding snack-tray type table for alongside your sewing station, works as a catch-all, ironing table, etc. The formation of the 2012 Retreat is already underway, with Sunset Pointe Chapter joining us.

CRUISE: All final payments will be taken this month for those going on the cruise. Cathy Stone is getting our "Hot Chick's Quilt" shirt order prepared, and there is discussion about making this our chapter logo shirt. More to come…

CHRISTMAS PARTY: Dec. 13th. at 11:00 a.m. will be the day to share some holiday cheer, and this year we are diverting to Pat Olsen's home, as Carell will just be "visiting" her house between trips during that time, and a bit stressed from all the damn traveling this year! (Oops, did I say that???)  Be prepared with a sewing/craft/ related gift for the exchange - if purchased, not more than around $15 value - if made, whatever you want - and a dish to share for the brunch. And we get to see another members home!!! Don't-cha love to see each other's places?!

GUILD CHRISTMAS PARTYDec. 6th is the Guild Party at Laurel Manor at 6:30 PM. We have been asked to supply the Ice Tea for the attendees. We'll get more details as we get closer.

LAUREL MANOR CHAPTER MINUTES:  NOVEMBER 8, 2011
We took in $734 at our Auction for the Treasury.   Click HERE to view pictures.
Well, we have another winner for an “Annual Event” for our chapter.  Creative-Minded Shirley Parker had suggested this, last year and we were smart enough to run with it.  When we saw the variety and amount of items brought in, we feared it would take all day, but purchasers were cooperatively responsive, and we bundled and batched some of the items for better value and efficiency, and we were done around 11:00 a.m.
The variety of items was impressive.  Finished pieces, unfinished pieces, quilts, kits and kits, tools, bags and holders of all measure, books, magazine bundles, fabulous scarves, painted wood, photo art, glass and ceramics, lots of fat quarters, fabric cuts, bags of trims and on and on.  Very imaginative and everything was bid on.  I already know what I’m going to put in next year!
The meeting included two other events: the presentation of our Friendship Stars lap quilt, individually made and signed by our chapter members, to Guild President Jeanette, as a token of our thoughts in her recent health challenges, and our appreciation for the good job she does for our membership, (pictures attached) and, the drawing of the Halloween Blocks, which went to Kristen, who let out a whoop of delight over it.  The Blocks this year were really extrordinary.
Auctioneer Pat Chapin kept things rolling with her enticing pleas for more money, later, Cathy Stone passed out final directions and suggestions for the Retreat, and Carole Cranston passed out patterns for the sampler quilt project. Everybody else kept buying and eating.
Thank you everyone, for participating, contributing and making this such a fun and financial success.
Our treasury is fat and happy and will be used to enrich our meetings next year and very importantly to provide quality charity to the older kids at Haven House this Christmas.

NEXT WEEK:  Meeting as usual, bring your own project, and then Wednesday, the Retreat starts at 9:00.

It is easy to tell when Carell is away. I want to share some of our news. We have survived our 1st retreat. Cathy Stone did an awesome job of organizing the retreat. We will be discussing the next retreat in the next few weeks. We are to share that retreat with Sunset Pointe.

The secretary is back - for a few meetings - This is one of "those" years.... when we're away more than we'd expected.

Great meeting, Tuesday - we covered a lot of topics:

Next Week: The Guild Christmas Party 6:30. We do not need to bring a dish, as our chapter is helping with the ice tea and soda. Since we are helping, it would be good for any attending to come a little early.

Next Meeting: Bring your own project. It's fun to see what people are working on. Almost like Show and Tell.

Christmas Charity: We have been given 3 teens to spread Christmas Cheer to. We just have their initials. We have 2 girls, ages 15 and 16 and one boy age 13. The boy needs shoes, mens size 10, 34/32 pants, medium mens shirts and would like an MP3 player, football/basketball and likes Ed Hardy cologne. The girls have sizes of womens shoes 6 and 7, junior slacks 3 and 5 small and medium junior tops and wishes for a make up kit, MP 3 player, rings size 7, perfume, amazon gift card and nail art kit. We have a committee (Jeannie, Carell, Linda, Donna and Cathy) that will be shoping for the items. If any of you wish to contribute additionally, let Jeannie know what items.

Our Christmas Party; Dec 13, 11:00 a.m. Brunch: It's getting close! Have an exchange gift (if bought value of around $15.) ready, and bring a brunch food to share, and prepare for a good time at Pat Olsen's home, 413 Society Hill Drive, in Mallory Square. Exact directions will be forthcoming. The Christmas Blocks will be drawn for at the party.

January MarketPlace: We have a sign up sheet for our worker contribution to this event. We expect either 2 or 3 hour slots on Saturday or Sunday. Our job will be relieving booth workers, running errands for them, being available wherever needed. The more who sign up, the shorter the work times, and we'll all want to be there, anyway!

Cruise: Everything's in place, we have our bus arranged and Cathy is working on our shirts, which will cost $5.00 for the screen printing over hot pink shirts, if we can find them.

Next Retreat: We spent quite a bit of time discussing the next retreat, as it is combining us with Sunset Point chapter, who already has 25 people signed up! The dates have been agreed to as October 2nd. 3rd. and 4th. and we are sending our share of the deposit to secure them, now.
We are estimating $160. for the retreat (only, additional cost for special teacher, etc.) and our committee members are Linda, Donna, Cathy, Pat and Joy. It seems like far away, but you know how it races by - so if you are considering attending, we are signing up now. That way we protect the dates from getting eaten up by unimportant things!

Mystic Blues, Sampler Style Quilt Pattern Correction: Donna asked me to correct a quantity on the fabric requirement list for this next project. The "Grey Tonal" should be 1/2 yd. and not 1.2 yds. It was a typo.

MISC: Visiting member, Linda showed us some interesting "contemporary" blocks she made from a free pattern called "A Circle of Geese". The website is Piece by Number. probably piecebynumber.com..... anyway, several members were interested in this pattern and site. Linda also gave us a hint for tearing out, especially small stitches - by using a tiny plastic "eyebrow" brush and literally brushing the stitches up and out.

We're pleased that Diana is done with her hand surgery, and like Joy, is on the mend. We hope she'll be back soon.  Donna has the patterns for the flip flops shown last week, and Shirley has agreed to demo them in the future.
